The Moroso My Beautiful Backside Sofa designed by Nipa Doshi and Jonathan Levien is an extravagant seating collection that explores the cultural fusion between Indian opulence and European tailoring. Originally launched in 2008, it captures the magic of a pile of pillows to create a deconstructed, sculptural form. The design was inspired by a miniature painting of a maharani sitting on a palace floor surrounded by cushions, leading to a composition of floating backrests in celebratory shapes. This approach breaks the traditional idea of a monochromatic sofa, offering a rhapsody of colors and geometric forms. The front of the sofa features customizable arrangements of varied cushions, while the backside reveals playful oversized symbols and buttons that jewel up the seating like an item of clothing. The seat is constructed from stress-resistant polyurethane foam in varied densities and polyester fiberfill on a wooden frame. The backrests are made of injected flame-retardant cold-foamed polyurethane over an internal steel frame to ensure structural integrity. Distinctive walnut feet with brass-plated metal glides provide a refined, elevated base. Upholstery options include a mix of wool, felt, silk, and cotton, often embellished with gold or silver foil printing to introduce an Indian character. Dimensions for the standard bench model are 160 centimeters wide, 89 centimeters deep, and 99 centimeters high, with a seat height of 40 centimeters. The collection is designed to be freely positioned within a room as a bold artistic statement rather than placed against a wall.
