The Temple Sofa Table from 101 Copenhagen takes a strictly architectural, monolithic approach to the center of a seating arrangement. Designed by Kristian Sofus Hansen & Tommy Hyldahl, it entirely bypasses the delicate glass tops or slender wooden armatures of traditional coffee tables in favor of a raw, monumental volume. Built primarily from solid, sand-colored limestone, the table is designed to function visually and physically like a dense fragment of an ancient ruin. This uncompromising construction strategy gives the piece an immense physical density, ensuring it acts as a grounded, unyielding anchor in a living room that will not shift or wobble under daily use.
Its defining practical feature is its highly constrained, modular footprint. Rather than forcing a massive, singular slab into the center of a room, the Temple series is produced in distinct, highly condensed geometric blocks—such as a low 42-by-40-centimeter block or a taller, 50-centimeter vertical variant. This specific scaling allows the user to deploy a single table as a strictly localized resting ledge, or cluster multiple heights and shapes together to form a stepped, fragmented landscape directly in front of a sofa. This modularity prevents the stone mass from dominating the floor plan, delivering heavy-duty horizontal surfaces exactly where needed while keeping the surrounding circulation space open.
Because the table relies entirely on raw stone—occasionally juxtaposed with a stark, high-gloss chrome base plate—the material actively dictates its functional performance. The solid limestone is inherently porous and heavily textured, functioning mechanically to absorb ambient light while displaying unique, naturally occurring surface imperfections. Engineered for strict structural resilience without the need for synthetic sealants or fragile veneers, the dense stone construction is robust enough to transition seamlessly from an interior lounge to an exposed outdoor terrace. Stripped of unnecessary decorative hardware or applied finishes, the Temple is a hardworking fixture that relies entirely on uncompromising raw material honesty and rigid geometric tension to physically define a room.
