Kvanum Køkken
As a child he learned all about leather, pegs and edge stitching. Gustav Johansson from Skattegården in Jung was the son of a shoemaker. He already started at a young age to help his father cut wooden battens. Gustav liked trees. When he was old enough, he was apprenticed as a carpenter. For ten years he worked as a construction worker and cabinetmaker. In 1923 he opened his own business on Åsbogatan in Kvänum. The kitchen in the very special red color is still there with a planing bench and shavings on the floor. Gustav worked with his hat on and his pipe in his mouth. Then as now the light fell in through the window. Gustav knocked out his pipe and stomped on the embers; the no smoking sign still hangs on the wall. Gustav made the first kitchen for his wife Anna's parents in the 20s. In the 30s, looms were made for the poorhouse in Malmø. Seventy years later, we supplied all the kitchens to Turning Torso in the same city. Our history is part of the story of how modern Sweden came to be.In 1964 we received an award for Kitchen of the Year. It has been at many prices since then. Today, you can find our kitchens and furnishings in French castles and oriental palaces, in London's Shoreditch and in New York's Manhattan, among Danish dunes and in Swedish pine groves. We ourselves are still based in Kvänum, on the other side of the road with history within sight and tradition within walking distance
