The creative partnership between Spanish ceramic artist Xavier Mañosa (founder of studio Apparatu) and Berlin-based design studio Mashallah is acclaimed for fusing centuries-old pottery craft with cutting-edge digital modeling. Raised in his family’s artisan ceramic workshop near Barcelona, Mañosa paired his tactile mastery of clay with Mashallah’s expertise in algorithmic computation and 3D digital simulation, exploring how virtual geometries can be translated into warm, handcrafted objects. Their defining achievement is a series of luminous collaborations with Spanish lighting manufacturer Marset. Most celebrated is the Pleat Box pendant collection (2011), conceived by digitally simulating the fluid draping of fabric and casting the resulting folds into glazed ceramic with 24-karat gold or glossy white enamel interiors. Following this success, they created the faceted Scotch Club collection—taking inspiration from rotating disco balls to translate geometric relief into artisanal terracotta luminaires.
