Sam Larsson
Swedish interior architect and furniture designer Sam Larsson (1910–1998) was an influential contributor to post-war Swedish modernism, celebrated for championing human ergonomics, lightweight timber joinery, and accessible democratic furniture. Trained in classical Scandinavian cabinetmaking, Larsson devoted his practice to serving the domestic needs of post-war families. Larsson achieved enduring design acclaim through his fruitful, mid-century partnership with Swedish furniture manufacturer Dux. His crowning triumph is the Sam Chair (1974)—an ergonomic, lightweight armchair crafted from natural light Swedish birch, canvas webbing, and soft button-tufted leather or wool cushions. Stripping away heavy frames in favor of flexible, posture-supporting wood slats, his seating provided affordable, body-conscious relaxation across Nordic living rooms.
