Danish furniture architect Niels Jørgen Haugesen (1936–2013) was a master of late Danish Modernism, renowned for an uncompromising aesthetic centered on structural transparency, industrial sheet metal, and geometric rigor. Apprenticed as a carpenter before studying at the School of Arts and Crafts in Copenhagen, Haugesen spent five formative years working in the studio of Arne Jacobsen. Haugesen achieved international design fame with the iconic X-Line Chair (1977), manufactured by Hybodan and later Bent Krogh (reissued by Magis). Built from slender chrome-plated steel rods and perforated sheet metal, the chair uses an ingenious diagonal cross-tension wire frame that provides remarkable stability and stackability. He was awarded the Danish ID Prize three times for his functional, minimalist contract furniture.
