Julie Tolvanen

American-born, Helsinki-based designer Julie Tolvanen (b. 1976) is recognized for an understated, material-driven approach that brings gentle humor, graphic clarity, and tactile warmth to homeware. Working initially as a master woodworker in the US for a decade, she earned a master’s in furniture design from Aalto University before establishing Studio Tolvanen alongside Mika Tolvanen. Tolvanen gained prominent recognition through collaborations with leading Scandinavian and international labels. For Danish brand WOUD, she created the whimsical Loop Tray series and the Wallie wall shelf—an elegant floating console combining bent plywood and powder-coated metal. Her portfolio spans turned-wood tabletop objects, tactile desk accessories, and acoustic textiles that celebrate honest manufacturing.
