Danish functionalist masters Arne Jacobsen (1902–1971) and Flemming Lassen (1902–1984) were childhood companions whose early collaboration helped ignite Danish Modernism. Both trained architects, the pair achieved early historic fame in 1929 by winning the Copenhagen Trades Association competition with their radical, circular House of the Future. Their most celebrated collaborative furniture piece is the Mayor Sofa (AJ5), designed in 1939 for the Søllerød Town Hall and reissued by &Tradition. Featuring an enclosed high back, deep vertical button tufting, and a slender solid-oak base, the sofa bridges classic Danish cabinetmaking with modernist simplicity. Jacobsen later designed the Egg and Swan, while Lassen created the beloved Tired Man armchair.
