Vilhelm Lauritzen
Renowned as one of Denmark’s greatest architects, Vilhelm Lauritzen (1894–1984) was a founding pioneer of Nordic functionalism. Educated at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, Lauritzen championed the total work of art (Gesamtkunstwerk), designing iconic public buildings alongside their bespoke furniture, fixtures, and interior luminaires. His architectural monuments, including the Copenhagen Airport Terminal and the Danish Broadcasting House (Radiohuset), served as the birthplace of historic lighting icons manufactured with Louis Poulsen. His timeless lighting portfolio features the VL45 Radiohus pendant—celebrated for its three-layer mouth-blown opal glass—the brass-accented VL38 desk lamp, and the sculptural VL Ring Crown series. For seating, his curved Radiohus Sofa and crafted Vega Chair, now reissued by Carl Hansen & Søn, embody his organic ergonomics.
