Piet Hein, Bruno Mathsson & Arne Jacobsen
Danish polymath Piet Hein (1905–1996), Swedish bentwood master Bruno Mathsson (1907–1988), and Danish architectural titan Arne Jacobsen (1902–1971) formed one of the most celebrated intellectual design collaborations of the 20th century. United in Copenhagen during the late 1960s, the trio merged higher mathematics with master furniture craftsmanship. Their collective triumph is the world-renowned Superellipse Table (1968), manufactured by Fritz Hansen. Inspired by Hein’s mathematical formula designed to resolve traffic flow in Stockholm's Sergels Torg, the tabletop curve harmonizes the rectangle and the circle. Mathsson and Jacobsen resolved the structural base with the ingenious Span Leg—slender, spring-steel wire legs that detach without tools. The design offers democratic seating with no designated head of the table.
