Friso Kramer
Dutch industrial designer Friso Kramer (1922–2019) was a defining protagonist of post-war European functionalism, celebrated for championing mass industrial production and democratic utility. Working as chief designer for the steel furniture manufacturer De Cirkel from 1948 to 1963, Kramer rejected luxury handcraft in favor of lightweight sheet-metal engineering. Kramer achieved design immortality with the Revolt Chair (1953)—an ergonomic benchmark built from bent and stamped sheet-steel profile framing rather than standard tubular steel—and the iconic Result Chair (1958), co-designed with Wim Rietveld. Reissued today by HAY in partnership with Ahrend, these lightweight, durable seating systems furnished classrooms, factories, and civic institutions across Europe for generations.
