Description

The 48 Sofa Bench, designed by Finn Juhl in 1948 and produced by House of Finn Juhl, reflects the sculptural language that defines many of his works. The seat and backrest, shaped with organic profiles, naturally embrace the body and appear to float above the supporting frame, visually lightening the volume. This balance gives the piece a lifted presence, as if gravity had been challenged. A distinctive feature of the 48 Series is the use of multiple woods, a rare choice both then and now. The bench is available entirely in walnut or in a combination of oak with walnut details on the armrests and leg ends. This interplay of materials highlights the attention Juhl devoted to every detail. The upholstery, handcrafted in Denmark, is offered in fabric or leather, staying true to the artisanal tradition of the contemporary reissues. Although created in the post-war years, the 48 Sofa Bench preserves the innovative strength of its lines, expressing Finn Juhl’s vision of furniture that merges functionality, experimentation, and a refined sense of form.
