Ole Wanscher
Danish architect, professor, and furniture master Ole Wanscher (1903–1985) was an essential intellectual pillar of Danish Modernism. A devoted student and eventual successor of Kaare Klint at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, Wanscher drew inspiration from 18th-century English and classical Egyptian furniture, translating historic grace into modern, slender forms. Wanscher’s defining masterpieces were realized in close collaboration with cabinetmaker A.J. Iversen and manufactured today by Carl Hansen & Søn. Landmarks include the folding mahogany-and-leather Colonial Chair (OW149, 1949), the sculptural Egyptian Stool (OW200), and the T-Chair (OW150). His work is celebrated for its paper-thin armrests, gentle curves, and flawless solid-timber joinery.
