Illum Wikkelsø
Danish architect and cabinetmaker Illum Wikkelsø (1919–1999) was an essential protagonist of mid-century Scandinavian functionalism, celebrated for fluid silhouettes inspired by natural landscapes. Trained as a master cabinetmaker before studying furniture design under Kaare Klint at the School of Arts and Crafts, he worked with Peter Hvidt and Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen before establishing his studio in 1954. Wikkelsø’s defining triumphs are reissued today by Danish house Audo Copenhagen. His masterpieces include the sculptural Croissant Sofa and armchair (1962)—a playful, curved seating icon inspired by French pastry—and the organic V-Lounge Chair (ML90). Collaborating historically with cabinetmakers like CFC Silkeborg and Niels Eilersen, his seating exemplifies seamless timber joints and wrap-around comfort.
