Italian architect, industrial designer, and publisher Gio Ponti (1891–1979) was a towering visionary who shaped modern Italian culture. Graduating from the Politecnico di Milano, Ponti was a passionate advocate for living art, founding the influential design magazine Domus in 1928, directing the Monza Biennale, and orchestrating a vital dialogue between traditional craft and machine production. Ponti created enduring architectural and design masterpieces across six decades. His industrial design triumph was the ultralight Superleggera chair (Model 699, 1957) for Cassina, inspired by traditional Chiavari fisherman chairs and weighing just 1.7 kg. He served as artistic director at porcelain house Richard Ginori, authored lighting for FontanaArte (which he co-founded with Pietro Chiesa) and Arredoluce, and designed iconic mid-century seating reissued by Molteni&C, including the angular D.153.1 armchair.
