Pioneering Dutch architect and furniture craftsman Gerrit Rietveld was one of the foremost innovators of the modern avant garde. As a leading figure of the De Stijl movement alongside Piet Mondrian, Rietveld sought to dismantle decorative tradition in favor of elementary geometry, planar clarity, and primary colors, transforming functional furniture into three dimensional spatial art. Trained as a master cabinetmaker, Rietveld rethought structural mechanics with pure, machine friendly components. In 1918, he created his world famous Red and Blue Chair, an assemblage of intersecting beech laths and painted plywood panels that revolutionized twentieth century design theory. In 1934, he unveiled the cantilevered Zig Zag chair, a bold, diagonal feat of solid wood joinery manufactured today by Cassina. His architectural masterpiece, the Rietveld Schröder House in Utrecht, remains a celebrated UNESCO World Heritage site.
