Italian lighting pioneer and architect Elio Martinelli (1921–2004) was a visionary force in mid-century lighting. Trained in stage design at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence, he established Martinelli Luce in Lucca in 1950, pairing biomimetic inspiration with early industrial polymers and rotational molding. Martinelli achieved design immortality with the kinetic Cobra Lamp (1968)—featuring an articulated spherical hood on a swiveling resin base—and the organic Serpente table and floor series. His iconic Pipistrello and Foglia designs captured the fluidity of nature through opaline methacrylate and cast aluminum. His works earned prominent recognition at Eurodomus and remain cornerstones of modern lighting collections worldwide.
