Spanish functionalist architect Barba Corsini (1916–2008) is renowned for uniting mid-century international modernism with historic Mediterranean architecture. Deeply inspired by Mies van der Rohe and Finnish design, Corsini championed "powerful simplicity," stripping away ornament to emphasize structure and light. Corsini achieved international acclaim in 1955 when commissioned to transform the lofts of Antoni Gaudí’s iconic La Pedrera (Casa Milà) into thirteen modern apartments. He conceived bespoke furnishings to fit the space, including the celebrated Pedrera (PD2) Floor Lamp, whose perforated metal cylinder echoes Gaudí’s vaulted chimneys, and the organic Pedrera Coffee Table. Rediscovered and revived in the 1990s alongside Joaquim Ruiz Millet, these designs were reintroduced worldwide by GUBI.
