Leya Armchair High - Steel Frame
The Leya Armchair High from Freifrau takes a strictly dual-purpose, material-driven approach to high-backed lounge seating. Designed by the German studio Hoffmann Kahleyss Design, it entirely bypasses the bulky, uniform volumes of traditional wingback chairs in favor of a highly contrasting structural profile. Built on a rigid foundation of powder-coated steel—available as a slender wire sled base or a centralized pedestal—the metal framework keeps the heavy main body physically lifted off the floor. This structural transparency ensures that the large vertical mass of the chair does not visually dominate the floor plan or trap shadows in a tight room.
Its defining practical feature is the strict separation between its external architecture and internal ergonomics. The outer shell is tightly tailored and highly rigid, providing unyielding mechanical support and a clean, geometric silhouette. By extending the backrest upward to roughly 110 centimeters high, this rigid shell functions mechanically to fully support the user's neck and head. Furthermore, the slight inward curve of the high back operates as a localized acoustic barrier, physically shielding the sitter from surrounding room noise. In direct contrast, the interior seating area is deeply padded, built to actively contour to the user like a loose, unstructured cushion, delivering immediate comfort without expanding the external footprint.
Engineered to explicitly highlight this dual construction, the chair is frequently specified with contrasting materials. The rigid outer shell often utilizes thick, heavy-gauge aniline leather built to absorb natural oils and friction, intentionally developing a heavy, darkened patina over years of use. Meanwhile, the inner cushion relies on highly tactile, heavy-duty commercial textiles to manage heat and provide soft friction against the body. Stripped of unnecessary decorative skirting or massive wooden armrests, it is a hardworking, architectural fixture that relies on stark material juxtaposition and a commanding vertical presence to physically anchor a lounge space.
