Description

The FDB Møbler J46 Chair designed by Poul M. Volther in 1956 is one of the most recognizable and beloved pieces of Danish furniture, serving as a defining example of the functionalist design movement. Originally created to provide high-quality, affordable seating for the average home, the chair is characterized by its lightweight construction and an airy, fan-shaped backrest made of slender wooden spindles. These vertical slats are ergonomically curved to follow the shape of the back, offering a high degree of comfort despite the lack of upholstery. The seat features a subtle scoop and is supported by four tapered legs that are reinforced with cross-bracing for enhanced stability and longevity. Constructed primarily from solid beech or oak, the chair’s design is a refined evolution of the classic Windsor chair, stripped of all ornamentation to achieve a clean and modern aesthetic. Its versatility and timeless silhouette have made it a staple in both residential kitchens and sophisticated public spaces. Dimensions for the chair are 45 centimeters wide, 48 centimeters deep, and 80 centimeters high, with a seat height of 45 centimeters. Today, the J46 is produced in a wide variety of contemporary colors as well as classic natural wood finishes, allowing it to adapt to both traditional and avant-garde interior schemes while maintaining its status as a cornerstone of Danish design history.
