Torbjørn Bekken
Norwegian interior architect and furniture designer Torbjørn Bekken (1927–2003) was a defining protagonist of Norway’s post-war modernist golden age. Graduating from the National Academy of Craft and Art Industry (SHKS) in Oslo in 1952, Bekken was immediately recruited by the storied retailer and manufacturer Rastad & Relling Tegnekontor, where he shaped classic mid-century lines. Bekken is celebrated for fluid, sculptural wooden seating that eliminated harsh angles in favor of continuous, body-conscious curves. His defining masterworks include the Veng (Wing) lounge chair (1960)—reissued by Eikund—distinguished by its sculpted, wing-like armrests, button-tufted back, and slanted tapered oak legs. His portfolio also includes the stackable Kryss series and refined teak sideboards produced for high-end Norwegian residences, balancing structural lightness with generous comfort.
