Danish furniture architect, inventor, and manufacturer Poul Cadovius (1911–1996) was a revolutionary pioneer of post-war Scandinavian design, celebrated for freeing floor space through modular architectural wall furniture. Operating with an inventive entrepreneurial mindset, Cadovius held over 400 global patents across fiberglass, building components, and joinery. Cadovius achieved design immortality in 1948 with the world-renowned Royal System, manufactured by his firm Cado (reissued today by dk3). As one of the world's very first wall-mounted modular shelving systems, its slotted wooden rails, brass shelf hangers, and customizable cabinets in teak, oak, and rosewood allowed users to tailor their storage. He also designed the circular Abstracta System and the woven-cord Chess Chair.
