Arthur Umanoff
American industrial designer Arthur Umanoff (1923–1985) was a vital pioneer of mid-century modernism, celebrated for democratizing good design for post-war suburban living. Educated at Pratt Institute and the American Craftsmen’s School, Umanoff paired honest architectural lines with warm, organic materials. Umanoff is best known for his prolific metalwork and timber furniture produced by Raymor, Howard Miller, and Boyuer, reissued today by Audo Copenhagen. His signature designs include the Umanoff Barstool and Wine Rack, alongside the Pendant Lamp family. Characterized by slender black wrought-iron frames, solid walnut slats, hand-woven rush, and brushed brass details, his work exuded an approachable, casual sophistication.
