Ottilia Table Lamp

The Ottilia Table Lamp from Swedish maker Rubn approaches lighting with an emphasis on heavy, structural metalwork and substantial proportions. Designed by Niclas Hoflin, the fixture pairs a spun metal base—machined from solid steel, brass, or aluminum—with an oversized dome shade made of hand-blown opal glass. Standing 50 centimeters tall with a wide 40-centimeter diameter shade, it carries a larger, more grounded scale than typical desk lighting. This generous footprint allows it to operate either as an anchor on a wide credenza or side table, or set directly on the floor as a low-level ambient fixture. The defining functional element is the large opal glass dome. Instead of channeling light through a narrow opening or exposing the bulb, the glass completely envelops the light source, evenly diffusing illumination across 360 degrees without hot spots or directional glare. Anchoring this is a flared, 22.5-centimeter base that tapers slightly before expanding downward to provide a broad, weighted foundation. Weighing roughly 6 kilograms, the lamp stays firmly planted on surfaces and resists tipping during daily adjustments. Practical controls are integrated directly into the fixture. Rather than relying on a loose inline toggle on the 2-meter textile cord, the dimmer switch is built right onto the lamp body, letting you dial output from full task brightness down to a low glow without hunting behind furniture. The socket houses a standard E27 dimmable LED, making bulb replacement straightforward. Available in brushed brass, raw steel, or architectural powder coats like clay grey and beige red, the Ottilia relies on thick gauge metals and mechanical utility over decorative detail.
