British industrial designers Jack Smith and Gemma Matthias—founders of design studio SmithMatthias—are recognized for a thoughtful, hands-on approach that balances mechanical intelligence, material economy, and enduring longevity. Established in 2014, the partnership emerged from their shared background across leading architecture and product design practices, rooted in a deep curiosity for manufacturing processes and sustainable circular making. The duo achieved prominent international recognition through their lighting collaboration with Danish brand HAY. Their defining work is the versatile Noc lamp series, celebrated for its faceted die-cast aluminum shades, smooth powder-coated texture, and pragmatic functionality across clamp, wall, and table configurations.
