Niels Gammelgaard
Danish industrial architect and furniture designer Niels Gammelgaard (b. 1944) is celebrated for bringing industrial efficiency, wire-steel construction, and democratic pricing to global furniture design. Graduating in industrial design from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in 1970, Gammelgaard co-founded the influential design office Pelikan Design alongside Lars Mathiesen. Gammelgaard achieved international recognition through a legendary, decades-long partnership with IKEA. He designed defining populist icons including the Järpen wire chair (1983), the Guide shelving unit, and the folding Ted chair. Later, he authored high-end contract and residential furniture for Fritz Hansen, Bent Krogh, and Magnus Olesen, alongside his celebrated Butterfly chair series. His work focuses on material economy, stackability, and automated production.
