Danish architects Claus Bonderup (1943–2022) and Torsten Thorup (b. 1944) are celebrated for a crisp, geometric aesthetic that challenged the prevailing organic forms of late-1960s Scandinavian design. Graduating from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in 1969, the duo worked alongside Henning Larsen before co-founding their studio, applying strict mathematical proportions across architecture, museum design, and industrial luminaires. The pair achieved global fame with the legendary Semi Pendant (1968), now reissued by GUBI. Conceived during their student years by placing two quarter-circles back-to-back, its spun-metal arch and flared rim created a glare-free, cone-shaped light that became an international bestseller. Their work also includes the Calot lighting series for Fog & Mørup and major architectural landmarks such as the Arctic Center in Rovaniemi.
