Serge Mouille
French master silversmith, sculptor, and lighting pioneer Serge Mouille (1922–1972) was a monumental titan of mid-century design, celebrated for liberating interior illumination from heavy decorative conventions. Graduating from the École des Arts Appliqués in Paris, Mouille mastered metal-spinning and hammer-sculpting before dedicating his craft to lighting in 1953. Mouille achieved design immortality with his "Formes Noires" series, manufactured today by Éditions Serge Mouille. Characterized by slender black-lacquered steel tubes and organic, insect-like hand-beaten aluminum shades lined in reflective white, his icons include the Three-Arm Floor Lamp (1953), the Spider ceiling light, and the Antony sconce. His kinetic, pivoting arms allowed users to direct light with sculptural dynamism.
