Poul Kjærholm

Through his work as an architect and teacher, Poul Kjærholm (1929–1980) became a central figure in international furniture design. He combined a modern design language with an uncompromising approach to materials and quality, deeply rooted in Danish craftsmanship and inspired by the Bauhaus and De Stijl movements. Kjærholm saw himself not simply as a designer of objects, but as a creator of spaces. His furniture was often designed for specific environments, with exceptional attention to detail. Working with materials such as steel, leather, glass, wood and wicker, he sought to express each material’s unique character. His work is represented in major international museums, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and earned him numerous awards, including the Lunning Award and Eckersberg Medal.
