Poul Henningsen

Poul Henningsen (1894–1967), commonly known as PH, was an influential Danish designer who left an indelible mark on the field of lighting design. Born into an intellectual and artistic family, Henningsen was not formally trained in design or architecture, but his profound understanding of the interplay between light and life led to a career in which he achieved international acclaim.Henningsen's design philosophy was largely centered around the harmonious and functional application of light. He endeavored to craft fixtures that would mimic the soft glow of a petroleum lamp, illuminating spaces without causing harsh shadows or glare. His designs were innovative and elegant, always considering the quality of light they produced as well as their visual impact.Perhaps the most iconic work of Henningsen is the PH Lamp, a series of lighting fixtures designed with multiple concentric shades to direct light both horizontally and downwards. This ingenious arrangement eliminated glare and created a soft, diffused light that has remained popular since its introduction in the late 1920s.Another famous design by Henningsen is the PH Artichoke pendant light. Introduced in 1958, this stunning fixture features a series of overlapping leaves, which create a captivating interplay of light and shadow while ensuring completely glare-free illumination.
