Paavo Tynell
Affectionately celebrated as "the man who illuminated Finland," pioneer Paavo Tynell (1896–1973) stands as one of the twentieth century’s greatest masters of lighting design. Beginning his career as an apprentice tinsmith and blacksmith before studying at the Central School of Applied Arts in Helsinki, Tynell cofounded the legendary metalwork and lighting foundry Oy Taito Ab in 1918, serving as its managing director and lead designer. Tynell’s design philosophy united strict functionalism with an organic, romantic sensibility inspired by the Finnish wilderness. He elevated stamped and perforated brass into luminous art, puncturing metals to create delicate patterns of diffused, shimmering light. Revered worldwide and reissued today by Danish design house GUBI, his celebrated masterworks include the elegant 9602 Floor Lamp (the "Chinese Hat"), the perforated 1965 Pendant, the counterweighted A1965 luminaire, and the whimsical 5321 Desk Lamp with its brass clamshell shade.
