Mats Theselius
Swedish interior architect and artist-designer Mats Theselius (b. 1956) is a monumental figure in Scandinavian design, celebrated for subverting sterile functionalism through tactile, collectible masterworks. Graduating from Konstfack in Stockholm, Theselius served as a professor at HDK Valand, receiving the Bruno Mathsson Prize and Torsten and Wanja Söderberg Prize. Theselius achieved international acclaim through his long-standing collaboration with Swedish manufacturer Källemo. His defining triumph is the Elk Leather Armchair (Älgskinnsfåtöljen, 1989), wrapped in a curved, riveted sheet of patinated brass, alongside the copper Aluminium Chair, the Rex Chair, and the embossed National Geographic Bookcase. His limited-edition creations blend raw industrial metals, reindeer and elk hides, and Jacaranda timber.
