Danish designer John Brauer (b. 1960) is celebrated for his philosophy of "Symbolic Functionalism," creating everyday products whose visual form immediately communicates their intended purpose. Educated in architectural design, communication, and engineering across Denmark, Brauer worked in international product innovation before establishing his Copenhagen practice. Brauer achieved international design fame as the creative mind behind Danish brand Essey. His defining masterpiece is the Bin Bin wastebasket—an award-winning container injection-molded to resemble the crumpled wastepaper it is meant to hold. Following its global success, he designed the matching Wisa Wisa paper basket and the illusionistic Illusion Table, a hand-crafted acrylic side table shaped like a floating tablecloth.
