French mechanic and industrial pioneer Jean-Louis Domecq (1920–1983) is revered for creating one of the most celebrated functionalist lighting icons of the 20th century. Frustrated by delicate workshop lamps that broke under rugged factory conditions, Domecq spent the late 1940s engineering an indestructible, fully adjustable task light, founding Jieldé in 1953 (derived from his initials: Ji-El-Dé). Domecq achieved immortality with the Standard lamp (now known as the Loft series), followed by the compact Signal collection. His revolutionary breakthrough was an articulated arm with internal circular contacts inside the joints, eliminating external electrical cables that could fray or snap when twisted. Handcrafted in cast aluminum and pressed steel, his lamps transitioned from French machine shops into worldwide modern interior staples.
