The Hanzō Vesterbro restaurant in Copenhagen, part of the Madklubben restaurant collective, is a colorful and rebellious pan-Asian culinary venue located on the buzzing Værnedamsvej street. Operating as an Asian gastro bastard that bridges the energy of Vesterbro and Frederiksberg, the interior design breaks standard rules by mixing streetwear energy with high-contrast, experiential theatricality. Housed in a historic premises that originally operated as a traditional local butcher shop, the building’s heritage is playfully honored through preserved details, including specialized restrooms creatively built directly into the former butcher facilities. The core dining room is a maximalist burst of color, defined by a vibrant palette of powder pink and hot pink wall tiles that run throughout the space. To provide a distinct visual pop against this tilework, the seating arrangement features custom-upholstered fuchsia Rely and Pavilion chairs supplied by the design brand &Tradition. Long, luxurious velvet sofas run along the walls, catching the ambient, warm orange glow thrown from oversized, custom twisted wooden branch lamps mounted overhead. Intimate lighting is further enhanced across the geometric tablescapes using dark burgundy Caret table lamps, also from &Tradition, which scatter dim pools of illumination beneath playful pan-Asian decor. The ceiling space is treated like a theatrical stage, populated by traditional hanging kites, glowing paper lanterns, rows of waving lucky cats, and a life-sized, mystical dragon sculpture named Mushu patrolling above the guests. The layout maximizes social dining by organizing the main tables close together for a buzzing, communal market feel that matches the sharing-style menu flow. Deep in the back of the property, a secret party dining room can only be reached by sneaking directly through the waiters' corridor and the active open kitchen, referencing the hidden alleyway dining spots found across Kyoto and Bangkok
