Canadian furniture designer and craftsman Shawn Place (b. 1974) is celebrated for an elemental, materials-led approach centered on structural ergonomics, paper cord weaving, and delicate timber frameworks. Based in British Columbia, Place honed his craft through hands-on cabinetmaking before founding his independent studio, approaching seating through physical models and tensile tests. Place gained prominent international recognition through acclaimed seating collaborations with Canadian design house Bensen. His defining masterworks include the Tor chair and the celebrated Canoe chair—a lightweight, beautifully proportioned dining chair featuring a slender, turned solid-wood frame laced with hand-woven paper cord or saddle leather. His designs pare away structural bulk to achieve exceptional strength, acoustic lightness, and ergonomic comfort.
