American designer Bill Curry (1927–1971) was a defining creative force of California’s Space Age design movement. Trained at the ArtCenter College of Design, Curry worked in aeronautical advertising before founding his home furnishings studio, Design Line, in El Segundo in 1962. Curry revolutionized luminaire design by pioneering the "total look" lamp, discarding traditional multi-piece assemblies (base, stem, separate fabric shade) in favor of a unified, organic silhouette. Conceived in 1962, his iconic Stemlite series paired a die-cast tulip stem with a frosted mouth-blown glass globe. Voted "Most Influential Lamp of the Year" in 1965 by Industrial Design Magazine, it appeared on the original Star Trek set. Today, the Stemlite and playful Obello mushroom lamp are faithfully reissued by Danish house GUBI.
