Bruno Mathsson
Swedish architect and master furniture designer Bruno Mathsson (1907–1988) was a titan of Scandinavian modernism, internationally revered for pioneering organic bentwood ergonomics. Apprenticed under his father in Värnamo, Mathsson rejected heavy traditional upholstery, studying human sitting postures by sitting in snowdrifts to analyze the body's natural contours. Mathsson achieved design immortality through his laminated bentwood and woven hemp webbing seating, manufactured by Karl Mathsson and DUX. Landmarks include the undulating Pernilla, Eva, and Miranda armchairs, the aerodynamic Jetson lounge chair (1966) in steel and leather, and the mathematical Superellipse Table co-created with Piet Hein. His work earned the Gregor Paulsson Medal and global museum acclaim.
