Rocker Swinging Chair

The Rocker from Mater takes a traditional rocking chair and strips it down to its raw structural elements. Designed by Shawn Place, it is built heavily around exposed craftsmanship. The frame is constructed from solid, FSC-certified oak, featuring a softly curved profile and clearly visible joinery that skips decorative trim in favor of showing exactly how the piece is put together. Rather than using standard upholstery, the seat and back are formed from thick, vegetable-tanned harness leather. Drawing on traditional saddle-making techniques, the heavy full-grain leather is suspended directly across the wooden frame, providing a sturdy but flexible seat that molds slightly to the user. Because the leather is left natural and uncorrected, it will darken, soften, and develop a distinct patina through everyday use. Measuring just under 60 centimeters wide, it is relatively compact for a lounge chair, making it easy to position in a corner or next to a window without overwhelming the floor plan. Whether finished in a light matte oak or a darker grey stain, it is a highly tactile, heavy-duty piece of furniture designed to age visibly and last for generations, offering a straightforward, comfortable spot for reading or relaxing
