Italian architect and visionary Joe Colombo (1930–1971) was a pioneer of 1960s Space Age design, redefining modern living through modularity, kinetic mechanics, and futuristic plastics. Trained at the Brera Academy and Politecnico di Milano, Colombo broke away from traditional static furniture to engineer flexible, total-living environments tailored for mobile urban lifestyles. Colombo produced enduring design classics for leading manufacturers. His defining works include the iconic Boby mobile storage cart for B-Line, the sculptural molded-fiberglass Elda Chair for Comfort, and the interlocking plastic Universale Chair for Kartell—the first all-plastic chair made from a single injection mold. In lighting, he conceived the minimalist Coupé and Spider lamps for Oluce, earning the Compasso d’Oro for their adjustable magnetic joints.
