Marcel Gascoin
French designer and interior architect Marcel Gascoin (1907–1986) was a central figure of post-war European modernism, dedicated to creating rational, modular furniture for everyday homes. A leading member of the Union des Artistes Modernes (UAM), Gascoin emerged during France’s reconstruction era, championing clean proportions, industrial fabrication, and spatial efficiency without sacrificing the warmth of solid wood. Gascoin is internationally celebrated today through reissues by Danish design house GUBI. His defining triumph is the C-Chair (1947), originally designed to furnish compact apartments with its light footprint, elegant joinery, and woven French cane or paper cord seating. His portfolio also includes the modular B-Table, the S-Table, and the Gascoin Desk, all embodying his mastery of adaptable storage and democratic utility.
